Nawa Media is a program of Pax Memoria, a non-profit organisation which operates globally to help human rights defenders effectively use digital documentation of human rights violations and international crimes to support advocacy, justice, and accountability. 

Nawa Media focuses on documenting and preserving evidence of human rights abuses in Lebanon. We are human rights defenders, lawyers, archivists, technologists, and open-source investigators dedicated to preserving, memorialising and adding value to publicly available information related to human rights violations. We use our unique position as a cross-sectorial, cross-disciplinary organisation to help human rights defenders hold power to account.

About the Opportunity 

We are looking for an Open Source Investigation Trainer to deliver a comprehensive training program aimed at equipping  journalists, researchers, and investigators with the skills and knowledge to conduct effective open-source investigations. The trainer will lead a 5-day online training program, with hands-on exercises and group discussions, for the Nawa Media research team and partners. The trainer will cover various topics, tools, and techniques that enable participants to gather, analyse, and verify information from publicly available sources.

The Trainer will work closely with the assigned team member to conduct a pre-training assessment to gauge the needs of the participants and develop the relevant training methodology and materials. The Open Source Investigation Trainer will report and provide regular updates on participants’ progress and any adjustments made to the training program. The trainer will also collaborate with the program team to evaluate the training program’s overall success and identify improvement areas.

Training Objectives:

• Understanding the fundamentals of open source investigation and its importance in journalism, research, and other fields.
• Learning how to use various open-source investigation tools and techniques to gather information from publicly available sources.
• Developing the ability to analyse and verify information obtained through open-source investigation.
• Gaining practical experience in conducting open-source investigations through hands-on exercises and case studies.
• Understanding the ethical considerations and best practices in open source investigation.

Key Responsibilities

The Open Source Trainer and mentor will be responsible for the following tasks: 

• Conduct a pre-training assessment for the participants 
• Develop and deliver a tailored training program based on the needs and objectives of the participants.
• Provide instruction on the fundamentals of open-source investigation and its importance in journalism, research, and other fields.
• Teach participants various open-source investigation tools and techniques to gather information from publicly available sources.
• Develop hands-on exercises and case studies to provide practical experience conducting open-source investigations.
• Discuss ethical considerations and best practices in an open-source investigation.
• Assess participants’ progress and provide feedback for improvement.
• Adapt the training program as needed to ensure participants achieve their learning objectives.
• Provide guidance and instruction based on the Mentor’s expertise in OSINT and hair-related analysis.
• Share relevant resources and tools with the Mentee.
• Offer constructive feedback and support throughout the mentorship program.
• Adhere to ethical OSINT practices and promote responsible use of information.
• Clearly explain the limits of the mentors expertise.
• Maintain a reasonable response time to mentee questions.

Qualifications: 

• Proven experience conducting open-source investigations, preferably in journalism, research, or investigative fields.
• Strong knowledge of open-source investigation tools, techniques, and best practices.
• Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly and engagingly.
• Experience developing and delivering training programs, preferably in an open-source investigation or a related field.
• Familiarity with ethical considerations and best practices in an open-source investigation.
• Ability to adapt the training program to meet participants’ specific needs and objectives.
