1. Who we are

Pax Memoria ("we", "us", "our") is a non-profit organization dedicated to capturing and humanizing environmental narratives in crises-affected areas, based in Västra Frölunda, Sweden. This Privacy Policy explains what personal data we collect through paxmemoria.org, why we collect it, and the choices and rights available to you under the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and other applicable data protection laws.

2. What data we collect

We collect only the personal data you choose to give us directly, and a small amount of technical/local data needed to make the site work:

  • Contact form: if you use the form on our Contact page, we collect your name, email address, and message so we can respond to your inquiry.
  • Job applications: if you apply to an open position listed under Jobs, we collect whatever information you submit as part of that application (e.g. name, email, CV, or supporting documents), for recruitment purposes only.
  • Language preference: your choice of English or Arabic is stored locally in your browser (localStorage), on your own device — it is not sent to or stored on our servers.
  • Usage data: only if you allow analytics in our cookie notice, Google Analytics 4 records how the site is used (pages visited, approximate location, device and browser type) so we can measure aggregate traffic.
  • Ad measurement: we advertise some of our pages on Google. Only if you allow ad measurement in our cookie notice, Google Ads records whether a visit came from one of our ads and whether it led to an action we measure, such as opening a tool listed on our OSINT Tools page, so we can see how well our ads work. We do not use this data to show you personalized ads.

3. Cookies and similar technologies

A "cookie" is a small file a website can place on your device; "local storage" is a similar browser mechanism that keeps data on your device rather than sending it to us. This site uses strictly-necessary local storage and, only if you allow them in our cookie notice, Google Analytics cookies and Google Ads measurement cookies. You can allow either one without the other. We do not use cookies to show you personalized ads:

_gcl_auAd measurement cookie (only with your consent)Google Ads: a random identifier used to count actions that follow a click on one of our ads90 days
_gcl_awAd measurement cookie (only with your consent)Google Ads: stores the ad click identifier when you arrive from one of our ads90 days

Analytics and ad measurement are separate choices. If you decline one, its cookies are not set, and any that this site set earlier are removed. You can change or withdraw your choice at any time with the "Cookie settings" link at the bottom of every page, which reopens the cookie notice with your current choice selected. Clearing this site's data (cookies and local storage) in your browser also shows the notice again.

4. Third-party services

A few parts of the site rely on external services, which may process limited technical data (such as your IP address) as part of delivering their service to us:

  • Google Fonts: we load web fonts from Google's font service so the site displays correctly. Requests for these fonts are made directly from your browser to Google.
  • Google Analytics: with your explicit consent via our cookie notice, we use Google Analytics 4 (with Google Consent Mode v2) to measure aggregate website traffic and readership. If you decline, no analytics cookies are stored.
  • Google Ads: we advertise some of our pages on Google. With your explicit consent for ad measurement via our cookie notice, the site tells Google Ads when a visit from one of our ads leads to an action we measure. Google receives the ad click identifier, the page and technical data such as your IP address and browser type. Ad personalization is turned off, so this data is not used to show you personalized ads. If you decline, no Google Ads cookies are stored.
  • FormSubmit: our Contact form is processed by FormSubmit, a third-party form-handling service, which forwards your submission to our email inbox.

We do not sell or share your personal data with third parties for their own marketing purposes.

5. Legal basis for processing

Where GDPR applies, we rely on the following legal bases: your consent (for optional local storage/cookies), our legitimate interest in responding to inquiries and operating the site, and, for job applicants, the steps necessary to consider entering into a contract with you.

6. How long we keep your data

Contact form messages and job application materials are kept only as long as needed to respond to your inquiry or complete the relevant recruitment process, and are then deleted or anonymized, unless a longer retention period is required by law.

7. Your rights under GDPR

If you are in the European Economic Area (or another jurisdiction with similar protections), you have the right to:

  • Access the personal data we hold about you
  • Request correction of inaccurate data
  • Request deletion of your data ("right to be forgotten")
  • Restrict or object to certain processing
  • Request a portable copy of your data
  • Lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority

To exercise any of these rights, email GDPR@paxmemoria.org (see Section 10).

8. Data security

We take reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect the personal data we hold from unauthorized access, loss, or misuse. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, but we work to use commercially acceptable means to protect your information.

9. Children's privacy

Our services are not directed at children, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us so we can remove it.
